    The Shortlist

In March of 2020, when the pandemic took over our lives, I told my parents, “Don’t go out, I don’t want you to catch the Coronavirus.” I can’t believe that one year later I have to tell them, “Don’t go out, I don’t want you to get attacked.”

The recent rise in hate-motivated attacks against the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is horrifying. It has been personally heartbreaking to witness the bias, prejudice, and violence that persist in our communities, including these unwarranted acts against the vulnerable and older generations. It is another reminder that we have a long way to go to create an equal, inclusive, and safe world for everyone. SMPS San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is committed to being at the forefront of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we are vehemently against racism of any kind.

Racism, xenophobia, and violence have no place in our society and we stand with the AAPI community – most importantly with our members across the country. No matter the place, we are all allies in the fight against racism and inequity. Solidarity is important.

This is an incredibly difficult time for our AAPI friends and community, and I encourage each of you to check in with your peers, partners, friends, and community members to show your support. It starts with us speaking up and bringing these issues to the forefront of conversation. We will continue to use our collective power to create and advocate for positive change and a more inclusive future.

There is an abundance of resources readily available and I hope you will join the conversation and continue to uplift and celebrate the AAPI community. Here are some reputable organizations you can support and get involved with:

Together, we can put an end to hate of all kinds and continue our journey toward creating a more inclusive community.
