PRC 2019 Preview – Ride the Wave

Aloha 2019! It’s officially the new year and I can’t wait to join my SMPS friends and colleagues for the 2019 Pacific Regional Conference later this month. It’s going to be a spectacular two and a half days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Resort.

Below is a snapshot of conference highlights including 18 break-out educational sessions, four general session keynotes, and a fun social and networking event done Hawaiian-style.

Wednesday, January 30

Society Volunteer Forum
PRC kicks off in the early afternoon with a Society Volunteer Forum – all conference attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Through a Different Lens: Marketing Lessons for Professionals from an Avid Photographer
The first general session will take place with Howard Wolff, FSMPS, as the keynote speaker. Howard is the founder of Full-Height Advice, a strategic marketing consulting practice in Hawaii. He has received international recognition as a speaker, writer, and marketing consultant. He is also a distinguished SMPS Fellow and past winner of the organization’s highest honor, The Weld Coxe Marketing Achievement Award. In this session, Howard will offer insights and practical advice on how to use photography to step up your game and differentiate from competitors. He will also share examples of how to change your point of view to improve results.

Welcome Reception and Restaurant Roundup
The day will conclude with an early evening welcome reception. Come experience the wonderful Hawaiian culture while networking with other attendees. Then, sign up for the restaurant round up and get a taste of the local fare.

Thursday, January 31

Morning Keynote
Thursday morning’s special speaker will be Christine Camp, CRE, CCIM, President and CEO of Avalon Group, a real estate brokerage and development firm. With over 25 years of industry experience and leadership, Christine has gained recognition as an expert in real estate and finance issues. Her many accomplishments include being named YMCA Women Leader, 40-Under 40 Community Leader of the Year, and Building Industry’s developer of the year. Prepare to be energized and inspired as Christine shares how she built Avalon Group and the lessons she learned along the way.

Break-Out Educational Sessions
Break-out programs begin on Thursday and are categorized into three tracks – Synergize (your firm), Extend (the profession) and Overcome (personal growth). Within those tracks, there are 18 terrific programing topics to choose from, so you can select the sessions that are most relevant and interesting to you.

Synergize is all about adding value to your firm by exploring the challenges and priorities relevant to firm owners and management.

Extend focuses on the profession and refining your craft by looking at processes, procedures, tools, and resources relevant to the modern marketer and business developer.

And, Overcome concentrates on overcoming common obstacles for strategic personal growth through greater self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Inside the Fellows Studio
Don’t miss this engaging conversation done in the style of “Inside the Actor’s Studio.” The panel will feature some of the region’s newest Fellows including SFBAC’s very own Alethea O’Dell, FSMPS, CPSM, Chief Marketing Officer for Northland Controls, and Myrna Wagner, FSMPS, CPSM, Vice President of Business Development at Swinerton.

Pau Hana Social Networking Event
Lastly, grab your comfy flip-flops for the PRC “Pau Hana” social. In Hawaiian, Pau hana means finished work. It’s also known by locals as a time for relaxing and gathering with friends. This social event is a conference add-on, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible. These special events tend to fill up quickly.

Friday, February 1

Break-Out Educational Sessions
More break-out sessions to choose from throughout the morning and early afternoon.

General Session: Stealing from Surf Brands For Differentiation
The last session of the day will not disappoint. David Lecours, CPSM, Principal of LecoursDesign, is an award-winning A/E/C marketing and branding consultant. He is also co-host of the PSM.show podcast, as well as a surfer. His love for both surfing and branding inspired this unique program in which David will present examples of cutting-edge graphic design, iconic people, founding stories, messaging, and archetypes that help surf brands and A/E/C firms stand out.

There’s still time if you haven’t registered yet. Registration will be open through January 16.  Visit www.smps-prc.org for more information.

I hope to see you in sunny Oahu!

Vanessa Pelletier, CPSM, is the Director of Business Development for Cumming Corporation, a leading cost estimating and construction management firm, where she covers the Northern California region. She is also a Past President of the SMPS San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (2016-2017).
