    September President's Message: Embracing Change and Finding the Magic!

    When I became president-elect last year, I had no idea that I’d be taking on the president role halfway through a global pandemic and at the beginning of a movement for racial justice and equality. I thought, “This isn’t what I signed up for!” But I quickly realized that change and innovation are greater during challenging times, and that’s when I got excited. I firmly believe in the SMPS Vision of “Business Transformed through Marketing Leadership”—and now, both leadership and transformation are needed more than ever. It only makes sense that our first educational program of the board year coming up in October is on leadership.     Deliver Value to Our Members

    Determining your “whys” can help you find the inspiration and motivation to encourage change and innovation. During the SMPS SFBAC board strategic planning sessions this summer, the 2020–21 board discussed our motivations and why we are members, why we are volunteers, and why we are on the board. These discussions provided valuable insights to what our purpose as a board is, and how we can work together to bring value to our members. We have a solid plan in place to deliver value across all experience levels, domains of practice, and disciplines.
     
    Embrace Change & Promote Diversity

    A lot of our discussions at the strategic planning sessions also involved embracing change and staying nimble. We’ve all had to pivot quickly to a new virtual world. We don’t know what the year will look like, or when it will be safe to return to in-person events, so we’re planning our programming to be adaptable to all scenarios. Currently, we are not expecting to be able to have in-person events until 2021.
     
    Embracing change also includes making strides towards our goal of being at the forefront of equity, inclusion, and diversity. We are excited to have added a new Diversity and Inclusion Advisor position to our board. In this position, Kim Pipkin will work with the entire board to advance equality for our chapter and create a more diverse and welcoming experience for all members. Look out for information on our fall event on Diversity & Inclusion coming soon.
     
    Inspire Growth by Finding the Magic!

    Even though we’ve faced challenges and disruption over the past few months, I try to remember to look for the magic in every day and approach things from a place of gratitude. We have an amazing Board of Directors who have spent the summer reviewing member feedback, creating committee goals, and preparing to “find the magic” for our members in a changing climate. We would love to have you be a part of the action. Our Future Programming Workshop is coming up on September 8, so please register if you’d like to be involved in shaping our programming for 2021.     The board is working hard to plan relevant and timely programming, but we don’t have all the answers. By getting involved, sharing knowledge, and working as a community, we can achieve more than by working alone. I gave this year’s board members a copy of the book Achieve Anything in Just One Year, which includes daily inspirations to “live your dreams and accomplish your goals.” I have one extra copy to send to one of you.
