    President's Message - November 2020

When I was drafting this message on Election Day, I kept thinking about a Tweet that said, “What do you get when you mix COVID anxiety, seasonal depression, good old-fashioned regular depression, and election stress – and then take away one hour of sunlight? We’re about to find out!”

In all seriousness, there’s a lot going on in the world, but let’s not forget that November is also a time to think about the spirit of giving. There are actions we can take to encourage and engage in giving back and helping others. The article 5 Ways Giving is Good For You discusses how giving can make you happier, improve your health, promote social connection, evoke gratitude, and even “spur a ripple effect of generosity through our community.”

Now is the ideal time to look for ways to be of service to others through your time, talents, or resources. Here at SMPS SFBAC we have several opportunities to help you get engaged with giving back.

    SMPS Gives Back
Through the Gives Back program, SMPS SFBAC focuses philanthropic efforts on issues that matter to our diverse community of members. Every year, our chapter partners with a local nonprofit to raise awareness of the causes they champion, sponsor their initiatives, and connect our members to volunteer opportunities in their own backyards. We’re excited to announce our Giving Back partner for 2020-21: 826 Valencia.

826 Valencia is a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting writing skills for under-resourced students aged six to eighteen and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Their services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. A representative from 826 Valencia will be giving a brief presentation at our holiday party on December 9th and 50% of ticket sales from the event will be donated. Stay tuned for additional ways to get involved with our Giving Back program.

     Mentoring Pathways
During this month of gratitude, we also give thanks for our growing network of experts who are quick to share advice, offer guidance, and help others navigate their careers. This is exactly why we established Mentoring Pathways. In 2021, we are adopting an all-virtual format in an effort to enable all participants to leverage a wide range of expertise, benefit from a variety of experience, and ultimately expand their networks. Whether you have served as a mentor or been the recipient of great coaching – formally or not – you know how rewarding it can be and the professional and personal impact it can have on others, not to mention yourself. We are currently accepting applications from now through November 30th. If you would like to give back as a mentor, or participate as a protégé, please join us.

Whether you have a lot of time or a little time, our Chapter has multiple volunteer opportunities available. We offer a safe and supportive environment in which to learn new skills, engage in high-value networking, and take on leadership positions. If you’re ready to take your career to the next level, get involved in a committee today. Please get in touch with any board member for more information.

Lastly, don’t forget to check our calendar for upcoming events. There are multiple events coming up in November and December designed to further our mission to advocate for, educate, and connect leaders in the building industry.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving,
