Fellow SMPS San Francisco Members,
As your President-Elect, I'm reaching out today with an exciting invitation: step forward and shape the future of our chapter by nominating yourself for a position on the SMPS SF Board of Directors!
Our chapter is vibrant, dynamic, and filled with talented marketing and business development professionals who are driving transformation within the A/E/C industries. We believe, wholeheartedly, in Business Transformed Through Marketing Leadership, and the Board of Directors plays a crucial role in making that vision a reality for our members.
This year presents a truly unique opportunity. Due to national changes, the upcoming board term will be an extended 16-month adventure! That's four extra months to make a significant positive impact, to empower your fellow members, and to infuse even more fun into our chapter's activities and initiatives. Imagine the possibilities – the expanded programs we can develop, the deeper connections we can forge, and the greater influence we can have on our industry.
Why Should YOU Consider Nominating Yourself?
This isn't just about filling a role; it's about investing in yourself, your career, and the future of our SMPS SF community. Serving on the board offers invaluable opportunities to:
● Lead and Inspire: Directly contribute to the strategic direction of our chapter and help shape the experiences of your peers.
● Expand Your Network: Connect with influential leaders within SMPS SF and the broader A/E/C community on a deeper level.
● Develop New Skills: Hone your leadership, strategic planning, communication, and teamwork abilities.
● Make a Tangible Difference: Play a key role in developing impactful programs, events, and resources that empower our members and drive positive impact within their firms.
● Have Fun! We are committed to fostering a supportive and engaging environment where board service is both rewarding and enjoyable. We want to bring more fun into everything we do.
● Leverage the Extended Term: With 16 months, you'll have even more time to see your initiatives come to fruition and leave a lasting legacy on the chapter.
The Time is Now to Embrace Leadership.

Available Positions
SMPS is in the process of changing its fiscal year to begin January 1 instead of September 1. This change will take effect during the coming term. The upcoming term will officially commence on September 1, 2025, and will continue through December 31, 2026 (16 months total). The 2026 - 2027 term will return to 12 months and will commence on January 1, 2027, and will continue through December 31, 2027
Our available positions are:
President-Elect
As President-Elect, you’re stepping into a leadership pipeline that helps shape the future of the Chapter—and the experience of every member. This role is a unique blend of mentorship, strategy, and service. You’ll work closely with the current President and fellow Board members to guide Chapter priorities and programming, and build a cohesive and inclusive member experience as you prepare for your term of office.
As you prepare for your term of office, you’ll chair the Nominations & Elections Committee, serve as an ex-officio member of all standing committees, co-lead the Chapter’s annual Strategic Planning meeting, and act in place of the President when needed. You’ll automatically assume the role of President in the following year.
Serving as Chapter President is a rewarding opportunity to shape the vision and direction of the Chapter, build relationships across the AEC industry, practice and grow leadership skills in a volunteer setting, and raise your professional profile—along with your firm’s—within the regional and larger SMPS community.
Eligibility: To be eligible for election as President-Elect, an individual must have served on the Board of Directors for one year, or have served as a committee chair for one year, or have held a comparable leadership role within another professional or work-related organization for one year, and must be a member in good standing.
Secretary
The Secretary plays a vital role in keeping the Chapter organized, connected, and aligned. In addition to managing Chapter records and preparing materials for monthly Board meetings, the Secretary is a key contributor to Board discussions and decisions. This is a flexible role that offers the opportunity to participate in strategic conversations and help shape the direction of the Chapter’s most important initiatives.
The Secretary works closely with the President, may be called upon to count votes or reference Bylaws during meetings, and acts as parliamentarian when needed. The Secretary also supports our volunteer digital community by maintaining records, organizing meeting minutes and support materials, and serving as Chapter Historian.
The Secretary is elected for a two-year term in odd-numbered years, with a term limit of two consecutive terms (four years total).
Eligibility: To be eligible for election as Secretary, an individual must be a member in good standing and have at least six months of experience volunteering on a Chapter committee.
Directors-at-Large (up to 5 positions available)
Directors-at-Large play an essential role in guiding the Chapter’s work and supporting its members. Each Director provides leadership within a key focus area and serves as a Board liaison to at least one Committee. Directors help shape Chapter priorities and ensure that our programs and member experiences stay relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
This role is ideal for professionals who want to deepen their involvement with SMPS and grow as leaders—whether you’re a newer manager ready to take the next step or a more experienced professional looking to make a broader impact. Directors-at-Large bring valuable perspective, help drive Chapter decisions, and are trusted collaborators who contribute where the Chapter needs them most.
Directors are elected for one-year terms and may serve up to two consecutive terms.
Eligibility: To be eligible for election as Director-at-Large, an individual must be a member in good standing and have at least six months of experience volunteering on a Chapter committee.
Who Can Serve?
Why not you? To be eligible for any Board position, individuals must be Regular or Distinguished Life Members of SMPS and must have maintained membership for at least one year by the date of our Annual Meeting in August 2025. No individual may hold more than one Board role at a time.
We welcome nominations from members who reflect the diversity of our community and bring energy, ideas, and a collaborative spirit to Chapter leadership.
